Fashion FYI: Brother Sharp Homeless Fashion Icon

Published by The Glit under Fashion FYIs

Chinese blogs are buzzing about a homeless man from the city of Ningbo called “Brother Sharp.”  The 35-year-old vagabond has been making his mark on fashion in a very unique way. He transforms discarded clothing into chic bohemian fits.

Brother Sharp’s (a.k.a “Handsome Vagabond” a.k.a “Beggar Prince”) birth name is Cheng Guorong. He is from a small providence in China, shortly after moving to the city of Ningbo in 2000, locals took note of his stylish torn and tattered garments.  Since then, he has become an Internet icon in China and his style has been said to rival that of fashion icons and celebs.

The Glit Gets 2 Know Fly Gypsy

Published by The Glit under New Glit, Uncategorized

Fly Gypsy

Since their introduction to the industry, Fly Gypsy, Jamaican-born emcee Kom Plex and Russian-born producer/one man band Alexei have gotten airtime on VH1 Soul and MTVu, as well as national and international recognition for their unique brand of Hip-Hop. Now that the band has a very successful album “Change For a Dollar” and mixtape “The Vodka & Rum Mixtape” under their belt, they are making sure their new project makes just as much noise.

The Glit got the chance to hang out with Fly Gypsy as they promote their new mixtape, which has yet to be titled. We caught up with the duo on Sunday at the Atlas Theatre, and got a chance to witness another one of their awesome shows. Because the guys hit the ground running when their first album dropped, they weren’t able to nurture their DC audience the way they wanted to, but this time around they are making sure their DC fans are ready—with ears wide open—for their soon-coming mixtape, slated to drop March 16th. The “Remix Kings” as we dubbed them, have been getting a lot of positive feedback about their recent remixes, including Robin Thicke’s “Sex Therapy,” “Wale’s Pretty Girls”, and their latest, David Guetta and Akons’s “Sexy Bitch”, to name a few. “We actually taking songs and making them better in our opinion, our humble opinion. Alexei touched up the production and I like flipped some of the concepts completely,” explains Kom Plex.

Although many would categorize Kom Plex as just a rapper, he would beg to differ. The emcee clarifies that he has never set aside his first love; spoken word. “I still haven’t transitioned to rap. I do both, says Kom Plex. He goes on to explain that “poetry for me is very different than hip-hop. There are a lot of people who slow down their rhymes and call them poems, but I actually write poetry. It’s like the same language but a different dialect”.

Fly Gypsy has definitely been leaving their stamp in various locations worldwide and continues to expand their brand even further.

Recently, the duo shot the video for their “I Wanna Rock (Brooklyn)” remix in NYC. Check out the new video which was released on Tuesday!

The Power Of Unity: Phil Ade & U.S. Royalty Set The Bar

Published by The Glit under New Glit, News

Phil Ade & U.S. Royalty Perform On Stage For The 1st Time

It was an epic moment last Friday, February 26, 2010, at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington, D.C., as 368 Music Group artist Phil Ade and rock band U.S. royalty joined forces on stage for the first time.  Both acts hit the stage individually and gave phenomenal performances, but it was the joint presentation that really made sparks fly.

The two acts prepared for the show weeks in advance, with an artistic promotional video that showcased a snippet of what they had in store for the actual show.  Although the promo video was very unique and undeniably extraordinary, it did no justice for the live production.  Phil Ade led the show with a brilliant set as usual. It was definitely a moment to capture… so who better to do so then moment catcher/ artist Demont Peekaso, who shared the stage with Phil and created another one of his masterpieces. U.S. royalty followed with a compilation of some of their most enticing songs. The crowd was hype from the start of the show to the finish; reciting the lyrics of both Phil Ade and U.S. Royalty verbatim.

The finale was what really took the crowd to the next level. Phil Ade joined U.S. Royalty on stage to perform their last song together. Their energy was crazy and the chemistry even crazier. “It was a whole different audience for me and like a whole different experience for me, said Phil. They fed me energy and I gave it back to them, I gave them my all. Tore it down man, it was fun!”

Who would have known that combining two different artists with totally different musical backgrounds would create such an impact? It is exactly what the DMV (D.C., MD, VA) area needs more of in order to create an unbreakable pact. The collaboration definitely set the bar for performers in the area, and is sure to become a trend that will hopefully broaden the DMV music scene.

This is prime proof that when individuals who share the same passion come together, the outcome can be electrifying.

D.C. Don Juan: Cut From A Different Cloth

Published by The Glit under New Glit

DC Don Juan

D.C. Don Juan

In an industry where it is the norm for rappers to boast about violence, drugs, riches, and to devalue women, there are exceptions. Amongst the select few lies NU Ent/Battery/Jive recording artist D.C. Don Juan; an energetic, personality-filled emcee hailing from the DMV (D.C, Maryland, Virginia) area by way of the Bronx, NY.

Before we get into the deets, we must first tell you why D.C. Don Juan is a Glit favorite. From the top of our conversation, his humility struck a chord with us. One of the first things that stood out was his respect for women. “One thing the world better know is that I love women to death and I believe that ladies need to be respected more… that’s what I’m trying to bring back to the game.”

His reverence for women is portrayed in his lyrics, his actions, and even in his name.

It is a common misconception that the emcee’s stage name derives from the representation of where he is from, and although the misunderstanding is a reasonable one, the true origin of his stage name has an even more relevant meaning. “As a child my mother always called me Don Juan because my middle name is Dejuan…and me growing up I always had a way with women, I always respected women. I lived up to the name Don Juan, but I always want to set myself aside from being a pimp,” he explains. “I tried to add something before the name Don Juan which is DC and people will swear that it’s DC because it’s Washington DC, or they think Denver Colorado…but it actually stands for my government name, Don Campbell.”

Although his name does not correlate directly with Washington, D.C., the city is a large part of his identity as a rapper—but it is only a fraction of it. The fact that he originates from the mecca of Hip-Hop, the Bronx, NY, also influences his rap style. Don Juan also pulls sounds from the various places that he has spent time in such as Denver, ATL, and L.A.—to name a few.

Ironically, his versatility has caused a bit of controversy in the DMV area. He is often criticized for being born outside of the region. “Because my mother didn’t lay down on a D.C. hospital bed and give birth to me, they consider me an outsider.” But this has not stopped D.C. Don Juan from gaining recognition on a national level. On a broader scale, his versatility has played as a catalyst to his success which ultimately helped him land his recording deal. “I was tired of just being hot in my town. When I realized that this is what I wanted to do as a career, I started putting myself in career-making situations. I started hanging out with DerMarr Johnson which got me acquainted with Carmello Anthony, Allen Iverson and all these other people which got me a lot of notoriety, but at the end of the day I didn’t want to be a basketball player,” he explains. This encouraged him to search for individuals in his own arena. He started working with people in the music industry including Polo Da Don, Boo & Gotti, and Cap One, and later created “Lookie Looky,” which became his first single.  Eventually he sparked the interest of many major labels. Don Juan does not attribute any single event to the closing of his deal with Jive—he simply sees it as a work of God which has kept him humble. It is that same humility alongside his undeniable talent and Glit factor, that makes him distinguishable.

His single “Lookie Looky” is not only a song, but a movement that inspires confidence and self appreciation. The success of “Lookie Looky” serves as motivation for Don Juan to go harder on all of his future projects. His current mixtape Congraduation: Twit-Tape 2—RELEASED FOR DOWLOAD TODAY—has a few surprises including pop, rock, and R&B remixes.

Q&A Quickie:

The Glit: Who are some of your favorite rap artists?

D.C. Don Juan: “Growing I favored Ludacris, Lil’ Wayne, and Nelly. Those where my three top rappers growing up that I listened to…I guess that’s where I get my swag from.”

The Glit: Can you tell us a few artists that you would like to work with?

D.C. Don Juan: “I love those who love me.”

The Glit: What would you be if you weren’t a rapper?

D.C. Don Juan: “I would be a R&B singer…lol. Seriously, if I wasn’t rapping I would probably be directing videos because everything ya’ll see footage wise on me on YouTube and everything, believe, I did and I edited myself. I edited a lot of peoples videos out here: Oy Boyz, Top Dog hill…I did a lot of people’s videos out here in D.C. before I did this rap thing. I’m great with computers period…or I’d be a preacher still trying to tell these knucklehead men out here to treat their women better.”
